Sweetgum Past and Future: "A dying leaf from a sweetgum tree lies near a seed-ball from the same tree. The leaf is a remnant of the season just past while the hard, spiny seed-ball contains the potential for the future. The sweetgum, native to the southeastern United States, has star-shaped leaves that turn fiery yellow, orange, red, and purple in the fall."
